Following are a few points that could not be added to the manual
prior to publication:
1. PUNCHIN:
When using Punch-In, cue up a few bars before the point
you wish to punch-in on (usually called a "pre-roll"). Then, select
the PUNCH-IN option from the menu and type in your start and end
points, also the trak you wish to use.
When you hit PLAY,a "Punch-In" indicator will come on in
the when you arrive at the punch-in point HELP WINDOW. When you hit
the punch-out point,a "Punch-Out" indicator will show in the same
place.
When the recorder is stopped, when the Dialog Box appears,
please note that there are THREE buttons, not two as shown in the
manual. The 3rd is [AGAIN] wish effectively "reloads" the Punch-In
option with the same settings. so you can try again. [REHEARSE] turns
off the Punch-In Options and does nothing.[TAKE] of course, writes
in your notes.
We have made the Punch-In "smart" so that where a Punch-In
would normally cause a note to be hung, because of a missing MIDI
NOTE-OFF, we "un-hang" it.
Incidentally, you may choose to Punch-In at Bar 1 and
out at 9999 (default to everything) and Punch-in will act just like
a record until you hit STOP (very useful, try it!).
2. AUTOMATIC UNHANG:
All edit functions now have a routine that scans your Traks
looking for note hangs that may have been caused by the operation of
a function (For instance, if you delete a note off in BAR 9, a
note might hang in BAR 8 as a result). When a "potential" hang
is sensed, an Alert-Box appears that tells you notes may hang,
and asks if you want them "unhung". If you do, choose [YES],
if not , choose [NO] with your mouse, or the [RETURN] key. If
you choose [YES], the "UNHANG" function will take over, find
the hang, and add a note off at the end of the BAR. If you decide
[NO], and you really mean "YES" (fickle),you may use the UNHANG
function selected from the menu and do it yourself.
3. DRUM MACHINES:
We have been using various drum machines with the the SW8
and found that the best way to transfer a drum track from the
drum machine to the SW8, is to set the SW8 on INTERNAL 24 or 48
(depends on the machine) and set the drum machine up for EXTERNAL
MIDI SYNC. Plug the MIDI IN of the SW8 to the OUT of the drum machine,
and the MIDI OUT of the SW8 to the MIDI in of the drums. Now, select
the song you want on your drums, set the SW8 to record (Roland
707,727,etc users may need to use MIDI ECHO to hear the drums
as they are being recorded), and your off!! When the drums
are finished, hit the STOP on the SW8, and presto, one drum trak.
If you MUST record using the SW8 in EXTERNAL MODE, keep your
eye on the two tempo indicators on both the ST and your drum machine,
(we found different manufacturers have different ideas about
their tempo settings. A tempo of 140 on one brand might be
144 on another. Also, turn the metronome off, if you don't need it.
4. STEP SEQUENCER TIES:
In order to correctly execute a TIE, using the Step
Sequencer we'll explain by example:
Let's say you want a Quarter note tied to a Sixteenth tied to a
Thirty-second. Select the Quarter note, Hit [TIE],Select the
Sixteenth, Hit [TIE], Select the Thirty-second, and play the
note (or chord). Its done!
5. DESK ACCESSORIES:
DON'T USE DESK ACCESSORIES! if you can avoid them. They eat up
the memory available for your sequence, and can potentially crash
the SW8. any Desk Accessory that is called from the SW8 that use
a timer or re-vectors an interrupt in the ST (many do) will
cause a crash. Since the SW8 uses the ST's hardware timers and
MIDI port on a continous basis (ex. MIDI Clocks are sent out the
MIDI port at all times!), any Accessory that uses a timer for
something else will crash rather dramatically.
6. MANUAL ERRATA:
On page 23, The two dialog boxes shown are reversed. The
RESET option should show a "Do you really want to erase everything?"
dialog, and the LOAD should show the "Select a Trak" box.
Good Luck with your music, and Enjoy!
