Of course, the arcade version with it's awesome b & w vector graphics is iconic and fun. But I don't last long.
The 7800 port is a nice port with colourful 3D sprites and highly recommended. Don't like the 2600 port. The asteroids blocked together doesn't feel right.
This version is actually my favorite. Sure it doesn't look great but it is an amazing game for 1981!
And it feels right. The asteroids go off in random directions. The spaceship really guns for you. The explosions sound awesome! Use shield option for best scores.
For some reason, certain, simple arcade games didn't necessarily make the smooth transition to the Atari 8-bit (c.f., Space Invaders). Without recreating the vector graphics of its arcade counterpart, this conversion of Asteroids has a bit of a different feel. And it's also very dull looking. (At least the 2600 version made up for that with a variety of colors.) The movement of the ship and graphics are also quite choppy. Still, one needs to give Atari the benefit of the doubt because in 1981 the potential of the 8-bit was not yet fully realized at this time. At least by Atari, anyway.

How can the Atari 800 version of Asteroids have WORSE graphics than on the 2600? Seriously, Asteroids is much better on the VCS. If you really want your fix, take a look at the 5200 and 7800 versions, which have really cool multiplayer.
yes very dull, and not even a good dull. Not very playable either...

I've never been an Asteroids fan, but the lock-step rotation in this version REALLY spoils it for me. Dull, dull, dull.

This no-frills conversion of the famous arcade game loses the atmosphere which made the original special. Although the graphics here are in solid colour (not monochromatic wireframe), they're low-res, flat and lacking in personality. Ditto most other aspects of the game, down to the use of the standard typeface- it just doesn't look like a lot of effort was put into this. The extra gameplay options are fine, and this conversion isn't awful by any means; it just doesn't feel like Asteroids.
