Wow, another 90 degree screen rotation offspring of Pac-Man made in 1981, the other being Jawbreaker of course. Pac-Man in the arcades was less than one year old at this time. Both clones are so closely modeled, the ghosts even slow down thru the wrap around tunnel. In Jawbreaker, after the 2nd wrap around tunnel was added in later versions they forgot to have the nasties slow down. Baddies go slow thru the original Pac-Man tunnel but not the 2nd tunnel.
Ghost Hunter maze is truer to Pac-Man because Jawbreaker added an extra top (in 90 degrees) row of maze with dots. Probably the best hack anyone could make using Jawbreaker Construction Set would be to remove that top row from the maze, to become most like arcade Pac-Man. Because Ghost Hunter falls short...
Ghost Hunter introduced some new twists, like the collection of pieces to earn extra man, and the extreme effect of dead ghosts going back into their home cage, but the gameplay in Ghost Hunter is disappointing in how the ghosts catch you when you go around corners, whereas real Pac-Man is more forgiving of brief character overlapping on the diagonals during cornering. |
