Definitely requires an instruction manual, as you're prompted for both pitching and swing styles (the only pitching style that I could figure out was "FAST," and I'm stumped for the swing styles). Fortunately, when the batter runs for first base (which is the only action I've seen in this game) he looks like he left his arms behind on home plate.
