Practical uses
It is believed that this was one of the applications used by NASA when they purchased several Atari TT computers from Atari in the early 90's to calculate and examine seismic data. "SeismicHandler is an analysis program for digital seismograms. It operates on various types of data records such as single traces, 3-component records, array seismograms, sets of globally distributed stations of arbitrary sample rates, and record sections of refraction seismograms. The user interface is based on a command language which is designed particularly for the handling of seismic traces. The predefined instruction set can be extended by more complex commands using command procedures. The main part of the program is machine independent, thus SH is portable to any computer type without much effort. Versions for VAX/VMS, SUN/UNIX, and ATARI TT already are in use."
