HIEROGLYPHIC WORD PROCESSOR
Write Your Name in Ancient Egyptian
Using this program, you will be able to write your name, as
well as a number of authentic Pharaonic titles and phrases, in
the actual Hieroglyphic script of the ancient Egyptians.
In addition to an Atari ST (obviously), the only other item
you will need is a printer which can follow the Epson graphics
protocol. This includes all Epsons as well as most other dot-
matrix printers, both 9 and 24 pin, which have an "Epson
Emulation" Mode.
To test your printer for compatibility, boot the "Display"
program in low resolution. The title screen will come on and
stay on for about 30 seconds while the hieroglyphs are being
loaded. Then the Operating Screen will appear. It contains
several rows of hieroglyphs, then a series of lines that looks
like a musical score, more hieroglyphs, and the Menu. Press the
S key on your keyboard and a series of characters will appear on
the lined staff portion of the screen. Press P and they should
print out on your printer. If the characters are "spaced out",
vertically, try turning off the "Auto LF" DIP switch on your
printer.
If this works, you might try to compose a line of your own.
First press N to clear the screen. Then move the mouse arrow to
the center of a hieroglyph and press the left button; a copy of
the character will be created and it will follow the mouse. Move
it to the left end of the lined staff and paste it down by
pressing the left button again. Continue with as many characters
as you wish; when you have finished your line press C to center
it on the page and P to print it out. Note that only those
characters that are pasted between the green lines and to the
right of the previous characters will print.
So that you can better use this program, we have prepared
two tables, a "Transliteration Chart for Proper Names" and a
"Translation Chart for Phrases" as well as a 32 page booklet.
The booklet explains the history of the hieroglyphs, their
decipherment, how to read them, and how to use this program. The
charts, booklet, and several sheets of artificial papyrus are
available for $6.00.
Of the 500 or so hieroglyphs, 49 of the most common are
contained in this program. An additional 92, including all of
the ones used in the booklet, indexed per Gardiner's Egyptian
Grammar, are available on a separate disk for an additional $7.00
if ordered separately or $6.00 if ordered with the booklet.
