How to play 'Stradegy', or at least
make out to your friends you know how
it works.
-------------------------------------

 Stradegy is totally mouse controlled
The basic idea is to capture as many
of the enemies counters as possible.
This is achieved by placing one of
your counters above and below the
enemy counter, or to the left and
right of it. In other words you must
'trap' it. You will then capture it.
This must be done a specific number
of times as indicated by the TARGET
number.
You can only place one counter at a
time. Simply click on any of the grid
squares and as long as it's empty and
you have some counters left you will
place a green circle there.

The screen displays.
--------------------

 The screen displays many different
things, to the beginner it may seem
confusing, but it all has a purpose:

IN. (green).
------------

This shows how many counter you have.
When you run out the enemy can use up
all his and you cannot block him -
this however is unfair and in the
early levels you have more or, the
same amount of counters as the enemy.

OUT. (green).
-------------

This shows how many of the enemy
counters you have 'captured'.

SCORE. (green).
---------------

This is your score. You score more
points for 'capturing' enemy counters
on later levels, and 50 pts for each
unused counter when you complete a
level.
You also score bonus points if you
capture 2 or more enemy counters by
only placing one of your counters. So
tricky moves are encouraged. If by
any small chance an enemy places his
counter on the board and it is
totally surrounded by your counters
without you having to place a further
counter you will earn double points.

IN, OUT, and SCORE. (red).
--------------------------

These show the same as above (but
for the enemy). Score, here refers to
the cumulative efforts of all the
enemies you have faced so far (not
the current enemy).

LEVEL.
------

Shows the current level you are on,
there are over 25 levels and if you
complete the last one, write to me
with the password and a blank ready
formatted disk and I shall send you
the STOS source code, so you can make
your own levels or see how it is done.

GAME MODE.
----------

There are three game modes which you
can switch between by clicking on the
MODE icon at the bottom of the screen.
However the current game is aborted
if you click here.

 The three modes are :

1. Contest. This is the normal fight
mode where you try and defeat all
   the computer opponents.

2. Double. This is the two player
mode where you and another human
   player can compete against each
other. There is only one level,
but it may be completed any number
of times to see for example,
   'The best of three'.
In this mode the game can either
be controlled by the mouse for
both players, (but if this is
   cumbersome the second player can
   use the joystick).

3. Trial. This is the practice mode.
You compete against an easy foe
and can reset the grid by clicking
on the RESET icon. The reset icon
has no other use in other modes.

HISCORE.
--------

Shows the highscore and by whom it
was achieved.
Please note that it is NOT saved to
disk so you may write protect the
disk.

FOE.
----

You face a different opponent each
level. This shows their name. Every
foe has different statistics.

INTELLIGENCE.
-------------

This shows how clever the current
opponent is. Intelligence measures if
he will put a counter anywhere at
random (level 1) or in a strategic
position (level 4).

PASS.
-----

Each level, or most levels have a
password. This tells you what it is.
If you enter it you automatically
continue from that level.

TIME.
-----

You only have a limited amount of
time to make a move, after which the
opponent automatically makes one -
your price for being too slow!
In Double mode this is also in use,
and you can easily tell which player
is currently having their turn by
the colour of the mouse pointer. If
it's green the first player, red -
the second.

The icons.
----------

The icons at the bottom of the
screen change certain parameters :

QUIT. Click here with both mouse
      buttons simultaneously to end
the program and return to GEM.

PASS. Click here and then enter the
password if you have one. Note
that there are no spaces and
you must type a full eleven
      characters. If you don't have
one just press any letter 11
      times and continue.

MODE. Click here to change the game
      mode. From CONTEST to DOUBLE
to TRIAL. The current game is
      aborted when you click here.

RESET. Click here to reset the board
      when on TRIAL mode.

Further information.
--------------------

On some monitors you may find that
the screen is noticably dark, I have
a T.V and so cannot judge by how much
this takes place. To attempt to
remedy this I have made a routine to
brighten the screen. Simply press the
+ and - keys to change the screen
brightness, there are 4 settings.
This, however, is simply a palette
change and raises the intensity of
the RGB output by 1 increment. You
may notice that at setting 4 the
colours are slightly distorted. Eg:
Orange looks like yellow. For the
best results compromise (set the
monitor brightness up and press +
until you are satisfied).
 Use setting four in emergencies!

Also you will find that the game can
be quite slow as when you place a
counter the computer makes a noise.
If you like your strategy games to be
a bit faster simply press * and the
sounds will be removed. This speeds
up the game considerably but beware -
the game is not mean't to be played
this way - you are making it harder
for yourself!

Final Note. (almost).
---------------------

Some foes are really evil and have
TWO moves instead of one after you
have taken a turn ( these should be
played with samples on! ).

Final Note. (really).
---------------------

Here are the games completed by me:

1. Darklyte (V 1.0).
2. Stradegy.
3. Demon ( I am currently trying to
compile this as it's very large).

Also look out for Data disks for
Darklyte and Stradegy and TerraMoon
( a Star Trek type game ).

 Why Cor-blimey Guv'nor !

E.O.F H.Tilley.
                Bye bye.
