Rainbow Islands
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rainbow Islands - subtitled 'The Story Of Bubble Bobble 2' - should not be
confused with Bubble Bobble 2 even though it is the sequel to Bubble Bobble.
Confused? Well Bubble Bobble 2 is basically Bubble Bobble with different level
layouts whilst Rainbow Islands is a very different game.
Bub and Bob have transformed back into their human forms and once again have to
battle all manner of cute opponents. The reason for this is somewhat vague but
is probably nothing to do with sausage factory barons.
Rainbow Islands has progressed from the static screen approach of its
predecessor - this time everything scrolls vertically and you must climb to the
top of each level.
Your weapon this time is the humble rainbow - hardly considered an instrument of
mass destruction in our world but in the land of Bubble Bobble things work
differently. You can imagine the UN Inspectors report on Saddam's arsenal - "We
didn't find any anthrax or other material for chemical weapons, but there were
vast reservoirs of water that could possible create a devastating amount of
rainbows."
To blow a rainbow press 'B'.
A rainbow will kill a baddy on touch. If the rainbow covers the baddy without
touching it then it becomes trapped in the rainbow. Jump on the rainbow to crack
it and kill its caged victim.
It is far better to drop rainbows on baddies than to fire them at baddies. You
get better bonuses from dropping rainbows on baddies. To drop a rainbow, blow it
above a baddy then jump on it.
Using this method you can collect the diamonds that will give you the letters of
RAINBOW and an extra life. Each different coloured diamond represents a
different letter of the word. Which colour diamond you get depends on where you
kill the baddy on the screen - if it dies on the far left you get an R, a death
on the far right will give you a W and so on.
Collect the coloured pots to gain double rainbows and fast rainbows.
Like Bubble Bobble, the shoes speed you up.
The big baddies appear on the last level of each world and require lots of
Rainbow hits to take them up.
The NES version also features some neat extra bits - at the end of each level
you get to chat to your friend who gives you advice and there are also treasure
chests which may or may not contain goodies. Choosing them is just as tense as
the Russian Roulette scenes in The Deer Hunter!
Happy hunting!
