Basically, the idea was that first you find the Grail in the daytime - then after accomplishing that, you get to do it again, but at night. (I.E. the screen rapidly darkens upon entering each screen - unless the bat appears! The arrival of the bat maintains the screen at the current level of light until it goes away.)
It was possible to retrieve the Grail again in the dark, although I only did so by abusing a bug - the Atari only supported five active objects at a time, more forced it to cycle between them. Since one of those objects is your character, if you drag all of the keys, items, etc into the room with the ship that leads to the Grail maze (accessed in the cave nearest home), you can "swim" across the otherwise solid water during the instants when the game is not watching your character.
My favorite too. I remember beating it a couple times. I always assumed that you were supposed to try and re-beat the game again in total dark. Near impossible of course. Great game. I liked toying with the rabbit by peeking in and out of his screen real fast until he was coming at you the right way. The white knight was always a bastard though.

Yes, you can beat the game (at least in the original on the Atari 800 you could). I remember playing it as a kid in the 80s - it was probably my favorite game of the time as well. It's just like Gates says, the church goes multicolored and the song plays, but I don't remember the explosion and blackness. I do remember being able to walk around the "world" after beating it, and nothing would really happen.
You couldn't beat this game. you'd get the cup back to the church at the beginning and nothing would happen. Other than the church turning black. Very Frustrating.
I remember playing this game as a teen late on cold winter nights. This was my absolute favorite 8-bit game, right up there with blue max. I was able to beat the game after many frustrating attempts. When you first see the grail you hear a short song/tone set. After you bring the grail to the starting screen the church goes multicolored as in Adbventure 2600 and you hear a triunphant song. Then you explode and everything turns black. Never could figure out the explosion and the screen going black. That moth ruined many a game at a critical point too!

Has anybody ever beaten this game?
