I expected the Atari version to have some great palette stuff, because Atari has so many colors and all. But somehow, the commenters here are right - the C64-version looks better, even with all the palette changing stuff going on.
Atari-version -should- look better, but for some reason, it doesn't.
Besides the colors, the game is so similar on both platforms, that it's pretty impossible to say, which version is better than the other. The big fault is that you never know quite what you are doing, what you just did, what you achieved or opened or locked.. it's all very unclear and cryptic. You just have to KNOW, and sometimes that gets confusing.
Still, it's quite an atmospheric game, and a nostalgic memory, flying a giant Zeppelin inside interesting caves in a mysterious ambience.

I liked this game more before I knew what I was doing, when I was just flying around and experimenting. But it's still a great game.

CHEAT MODE, unlimited lives, file version. Edit one byte in the sequence "$CE $84 $25" changing the $CE to become $AD. Found at byte offset number $1C84 in the file portion of the download presently here.
The cassette tape scan in this download was built with encryption, so this cheater won't work upon this cassette image. This file version ain't the greatest, it has been sliced up into 194 segments for trying to make basic compression, but ended up saving next to nothing storage space. Makes it hard to compare for bit corruption, which I haven't done.

@Jason; The two music tracks that played during Zeppelin's cassette load were Pachabel's Canon in D, and the William Tell Overture.

Interestingly, synapse could not get the colors right in their atari games. While the playability of the games do not change, the c64 has a better color palette.

For those who complained that ELITE never ported the "true" AIRWOLF to the XL/XE... Take a look at Zeppelin by Synapse... It's not too far off.

This game is incredible! The constantly-varying scrolling, the changing scenery, and the extensive animation are all nice(even if the graphics and sound aren't the most sophisticated stuff from Synapse), but this game's level designs and control are some of the best stuff ever! The earthquakes are also great, as is the death animation. I just wish that the sound didn't sound like something on the 2600.
