LEXICON is a combination learning game and database modeled after
"flash cards". The database part of the program allows you to build
lists of words which can be printed out or used by the game part of the
program. Each entry consists of a word or phrase in some language,
its translation in another language, and an example of its use.
The words may be a maximum of 20 characters; the example, a maximum
of 30 characters. I've provided two starter files of 100 entries
each. Feel free to add to or amend these as you like. It would be
nice if everyone who downloads this could expand the lexicons a
little and upload their versions.

The game can be played by one or two players. A word, chosen at
random, is flashed on the screen. Type in the correct translation
and press RETURN.

If the first player guesses correctly, he/she gets two points. If the
guess is wrong, play goes to the second player, who gets 1 point for
a correct answer. If no one gets the right answer after two
guesses, the program displays the correct translation and an
example. Players take turns guessing first.

The ST can display accented characters, but since these are used
as control codes by some printers, they may interfere with printing
the lexicons. FRENCH.LEX uses accented characters; ITALIAN.LEX does
not. If you like, you can print out the Italian file and add the
accents by hand.

If you're playing the game with the French file, you must use
the accented characters where needed. The program displays a table
of characters for your convenience. To use one, press and
"A" simultaneously, release, and enter the number of the desired
character. Only the character itself will appear at the cursor
location. In general, you must enter the word exactly as it is
listed in the lexicon.

When entering foreign words, use the articles before FOREIGN nouns,
e.g. "il treno" for "train"; "un treno" for "a train." Omit "the"
in front of English entries.
