    INFERNO

         By Simon Brown, 1990

    BUDGIE UK licenceware (c) 1990

           Playing the Game

Your task in this game is to control a
small but cunning demon in his bid to
return to his cosy fire in hell. You
must guide this trident-wielding fiend
around the five levels, eating all the
diamonds you can find and digging
through the constricting brown earth.
Not until all the diamonds are eaten
can you progress to the next level.

But you are not alone in these grey
half lands, oh no. Lurking around the
maze of tunnels you may see an orange
egg. Allow this to drop and a fearful
monster will emerge. This will not
harm you but will chase you into
corners and trap you. Avoid this, and
instead attempt to kill him by
dropping a boulder on him from a great
height.

Avoid also the skulls of your many
victims that little the place, for
running into them will cause you to
lose a life.

Boulders, too, are evil, for should
one drop upon your head, it is all
over. They drop if they are not
supported by something underneath
them. Nothing else in the game does
this. These boulders are strange
things, they can be pushed by you,
left or right, if there is nothing
obstructing them, just run into them
and watch them move. These boulders
roll off curved surfaces such as
diamonds, skulls and rounded walls, so
beware!

Observe also the brown safes, which
all, when a key is collected, open to
reveal a diamond.

Once you have eaten all the diamonds
(including those within safes), you
will notice that somewhere within the
maze a section of earth with a thin
grey rocky surround has transformed
into a small fire. Enter this to
descend to the next level.

  You control yourself using the
joystick, but avoid pressing fire
accidentally, as this will cause you
to lose a life (this is useful if you
should become trapped by boulders).

Pressing the 'M' key brings up
(after a short wait) a map of the
entire maze, and pressing the 'E' key
will end your game. Playing the music
slows the game down. To speed it up,
or if you merely find the music too
annoying, the music can be turned off
by pressing 'O' and restarted by
pressing 'I'.

         The Screen Designer

Included is a screen designer which
will allow you to design your own
screens using and play them using the
option from Inferno title screen.

When in the designer, pressing the
left hand button within the restricted
box will place the currently selected
character where you are pointing to.
Pressing the right hand button will
delete the character being pointed to.

To alter the character currently
selected, press one of the keys 'A' to
'Z'. These correspond with the line of
characters on the right hand side of
the screen. For instance, 'A' selects
the boulder, 'B' the diamond, 'C' the
key, right up to 'Z' which selects the
demon's start position.

When you have finished, pressing '1'
will allow you to save the screen, and
pressing '2' will reload a saved
screen.

Note: only screens saved on the
Inferno disk as 'USER.REP' will be
loaded by the game. You may call files
you are working on anything you wish,
but the game itself only recognises
'USER.REP'.

The game will run at different speeds
depending on the amount of boulders
your screen contains. To run at an
optimum speed, use about thirty to
forty boulders, but this is not vital.

To ensure your screens work correctly
when played, you must ensure there is
at least one boulder, one (and one
only) demon start position, one (and
again, one only) monster egg, and one
(one only) level exit character, which
is earth with a grey border. Remember
too that if you have safes on the
screen, to include a key.

Enjoy.
