* Who.

        HEARTLAND is the latest release from STOSSER Software,
Programmed by Tony Greenwood and the Artwork is by Dean Chadwick,
this game follows on from the 50 plus titles from STOSSER Software
and is the second release featuring graphics by Dean,
-----------------------------------------------------------------
* What.

       HEARTLAND is a fast multidirectional scrolling platform
game,featuring the largest virtual play area ever seen on an ATARI
platformer, the speed of this game also surpasses any we have seen
on any ST,
-----------------------------------------------------------------
* Where.

       HEARTLAND has been released into the Public Domain as
" Comment Ware ",The game is on limited release to anyone with
Internet access, this serves as a testing ground for any last
minute hitches,
-----------------------------------------------------------------
* When.

        HEARTLAND release date is the 28th of September at the
Birmingham (England) ATARI shows (Organised by Mike Goodman), but
the game has also been given liited release through the Internet
to guage responses, so if your reading this, then its released,
-----------------------------------------------------------------
* Why.

        HEARTLAND was made due to the fact that myself and Dean
where sick of seeing platform games released that did not do the
ATARI justice, even commercial offerings where bland, slow, boring
and a total rip off, we wanted to see a fast simple cute
platformer, so we made one,
-----------------------------------------------------------------
* How.

       HEARTLAND is "COMMENT Ware", if you play this game and like
it, you MUST get in touch and tell us, the incentive for ATARI
game making all but died with the demise of the last newstand
ATARI magazine, the ONLY thing that will keep us going, that will
spur us on to make more quality FREE software, is your comments,
your feedback, well just about any response from you the game
player, we are not asking for money, we do not want your money, we
are making software for the fun of it, it is our hobby, but we
will only continue to make games in 1996 and 1997 and many more
years to come, if you contact us,

-----------------------------------------------------------------
* Compatability.

        Heartland has been tested on, and therefore should work
faultlessly on ALL ATARI ST machines, this includes the awkward
for game makers TOS 205 and 206, Mega STs/STe, all you have to do
is bung it in the drive and away you go, The game will also run
from a Hard Drive,
        You will need at least one meg of memory, I have all but
stopped trying to make software to run on a half meg,
        The game will have enhanced sound if run on an STe,running
on a FM will have sound effects throughout the game, but no
background music,
        You will need a Jostick and a few spare hours.....

-----------------------------------------------------------------
* Controls.

        HEARTLAND is simplicity itself, You can boot from an auto
folder or from the desktop, from floppy or from a Hard drive,
After extensive (One time only) loading, you are presented with
the options screens, here you can configure the game, save/load
and even view the play area,

  In Game Controls...

   + Joystick Right..............Move Right
   + Joystick Fire...............Jump

   + SPACEBAR....................Options screen

   + C...........................Toggle Charactor
   + H...........................Toggle Hertz 50/60

-----------------------------------------------------------------
* Game Credits.

  All code, programming is by Tony Greenwood, Using STOS BASIC, a
2meg Ste and eeerm thats all on the programming,
   Artwork By Dean Chadwick, Although some of you will instantly
recognise the origins of the main charactor?, please see end nots
about his,

   Game testing, this is a very important part of game making,as
programmer it is very hard to spot faults or see where sometimes
obvious enhancements could be made, So mega thanks go to the
following ATARIans who where kind enough to spend many hours
testing,

    Tom Lamparty of the NEOSTAG ( North East Ohio ST ATARI Group )
Plenty of testing on a whole array of ATARI machines, many of Toms
suggestions have been implimented,

    Andrew Robertson from the STOS mailing list who has spent many
hours playing this game, lots of suggestions from Andrew as well,

     Anthony Jacques who tested on STs and gave me much valued
feedback regarding Falcon compatability, a Falcon version of this
game should follow thanks to Anthonys input,

     Testing also done by Keefy (of WARP Diskzine fame),Graham and
Yvonne Sykes, Phil Hough (SkyDual Author), many members of the
STOS mailing list and last but not least my Son Mark, who after
countless testing was reduced to "Ho do I have to Dad", hehehe.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
* Storyline, or what you have to do,

      Sissy and Sassy sit down to a game of cards, but lo and
behold some are missing (isn't that always the case), strange
though!, there is a whole suite of cards amiss, the set of Hearts,
      "We can't play without the hearts cried Sissy", "Yes you'r
right, they are the prettiest ones" said Sassy............

       Forget it!.....this is making me sick, sod the story line,

      You have to search the play area looking for a whole set of
hearts, the Ace,King,Queen and Jack are scattered around, all you
have to do is collect them,
      All the other cards are hidden behind doors, but when you go
to retrieve one from inside, you are magically whisked away to
another part of Heartland, and the door dissapears never to be
seen again ...
      Collect all the cards and you win, collect as many coins as
you can and your score increases,
       Spikes will decrease your energy, no energy results in
death,
      Potions can be obtained by simply running past them, however
not all of them will rejuvinate your energy bar, so even though
there are a lot of them, it would be wise to jump over and leave
them until your energy is low, why waste them?,

       Well the rest is up to you, by pressing SPACEBAR you can
return to the option screen where you can load/save game or look
at the map, returning to the game will plonk you in the same
postion as before you pressed space:)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dissclaimer.

        If you have any problems with this game, Any problems at
all, then tuff!, I went to great trouble to get this game tested,
not only is this game free, it has actually cost myself and Dean
money to make it!, so any complaints then i suggest you...... well
you get the idea

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Other Bits.

   The main charactor, most will recognise the origins from Dizzy,
this was not originally our intention, we used Dizzy as a test,
just while designing the game, so we could test the game engine
while waiting for artwork, well even though Dean came up with some
very nice Graphics, none could match the feel we already had with
Dizzy,
    I asked around on the Internet as to the copyright holders,
this seems to be Codemasters, but what I can gather is, they where
taken over by a company, who in turn merged with another, blah
blah blah, it would seem an impossability to find the copyright
holders,
   As Dizzy is no longer in production, not in commercial use, and
as our Game is Free and NO ONE should be making any money from it,
then we decided it was probably alright to continue with its use,

   So all I can say is, Codemasters must take credit for the Dizzy
Charactor, all other Graphics are in house from STOSSER Software,
plus we had to bring him to life

-----------------------------------------------------------------

   As you can imagine, there is scope for at least another three
follow ups, with Diamonds, Clubs and Spades, thats just for the
Cards angle,If you want them, just ask,

   We are now embarking on our next project for the ST, this will
be a large Graphic adventure game, I am looking forward to this,
if you want progress updates, want to know more about this next
game, what its like, when will it be ready etc, then write to Dean
Chadwick at the address stated earlier in this file,

-----------------------------------------------------------------

    There are now various ways to keep up with the ATARI scene in
the UK, Diskmagazines are a must, check out your local PD library
and ask for,

    ST+, This is a very good and informative diskmag that has the
added advantage of being released on a monthly basis, yet still
jammed to the gills with articles by ATARIans for you to read, get
it now, this is a must for all ATARIans,

    STOSSER diskzine, only now released a couple of times a year,
but still an excellent read and of most use to STOS users
worldwide,

     Maggie, nuff said :), one of the most polished diskzines
available, like STOSSER though, this is released on a as and when
basis,

      News of all these diskzines, and more can be obtained from
your local PD Library, but ST+ is a must as it is the most regular
and for me easilly takes the place of any newstand magazine,
-----------------------------------------------------------------

 OK thats about it....Write to Dean NOW

  Or if you are a lazy git with Internet access then you can email

  This email should be valid...forever?,

   FINAL NOTE **** If you obtain this game a few years after its
released, please do feel free to get in touch, I will still be
programming for the ATARI...No matter what!
