                       DONKEY ISLAND 21st March Preview.
A "bare bones" public domain taster by Ed Cleveland.
Which may be freely distributed provided you keep this document with it.
(Sorry about the last preview guys and gal, this one DOES work on the Falcon.)

Greetings graphic adventure fans!
This is a work in progress preview of a game I'm writing called "Donkey
Island". It runs on STFM STE & Falcon and probably TT too. I recommend you set
the video mode to ST Low or Medium resolution if you're using a Falcon
otherwise the desktop colours will mess up when you exit. It's all Atari's
fault. On an ST however, either Low or Medium res works fine.
The game is totally controlled from the keyboard, but remember to use the
keypad not the main number keys. It's actually easier to use the keypad as your
hand doesn't have to move about so much. To play the game walk "Fred" (he's the
bloke with the glasses) up to something using the cursor keys and then press
the other buttons as appropiate. Note that in this version, they either don't
all work or will only work in certain places. Try moving Fred so that he's
facing and directly in front of the goldfish bowl, and then press "7" to find
out what his goldfish is called. The best way to get the hang of the control
system is to experiment. Fred will usually inform you if you're doing something
wrong.
Although this preview is very limited, you should be able to get a feel for
the game. Note that some graphics are unfinished and that some things are
subject to change. The finished game will have sampled sound effects,
characters you can talk to, and proper animations for most actions, unlike the
lift at the moment!
What passes for the plot of the game is that you must find out what happened
to the unreleased sequel to the classic ST game "Dog Island", which was called
"Donkey Island". The aim of the game is to get hold of a copy of it by any
means possible. Any resemblence to real life is, of course, totally
co-incidental.
I'm intentionally trying to write the game so it will work on the ST
emulators that have sprung up, unlike almost every other ST game it seems. So
if you have an ST emulator try this on it- I'd be interested to hear how you
get on. The game should be finished by the end of April provided my brain
does'nt go on strike, and the full version will cost European residents 5 UK
pounds and everyone else a little bit more to pay for the extra postage
incurred. There'll also be a restricted demo version released into the public
domain so you can try before you buy.

If you want to contact me about this game write to:

Note that if you want a reply, you'll have to enclose a stamped,
self-addressed envelope. If you're writing from overseas, enclose international
reply coupons instead of a stamp. All enquiries from dodgy one-man "software
houses" that tend not to pay people for their work will be ignored.
              See ya!
