One explanation:Wotan is the all-powerful saxon war god...
As he discovers his axe has disappeared,by dinosaurs maybe..
(dinosaurs can open doors,so they can steel axes..)
well,when he discovers it,he decides to recover it.
(That's what anyone would do)
But,Wotan doesn't go to court,it's too long and too boring..
we couldn't make a game out of it...
Instead,he transforms himself into a Zodiak-like boat,
and goes on rivers to recover his great axe...
You are Wotan,the all-powerful saxon war god..(I've already
said it?  sorry,but he really is the all-powerful saxon war god)
