It's hard to believe this is worse than the 2600 version, but it is.

See the new (2012) "Asteroids Emulator" for model 800. It is the actual Arcade program interfaced with a screen emulator, NTSC will look best with artifacting turned off via emulation.

The 5200/8-bit Asteroids appear to be the same code. They appear to be written in mode7 graphics, using the Player/Missile Graphics for the ship and shot. The 2600 appears to be written using a different technique. It looks as if they used the Player/Missile Graphics for all animation. They are lower resolution rocks, more colors, and they flicker.

As far as I can tell, both the 400/800 & 5200 are just a conversion of the 2600's Asteroids. Miserable, considering that this is an Atari original.

As far as I can tell, this is just the 400/800 conversion with minor adjustments to run on the 5200. In other words, a no-frills job with bland bitmapped graphics. Although the original's features are mostly present and correct, this conversion totally lacks the wireframe brilliance and atmosphere of its arcade sibling.
