If I remember correctly the O-shaped things are your eggs, and you tried to eliminate all the creatures in the game that threatened your eggs. The creatures would breed and multiply, putting time pressure on you to clear the level of them.

This game has always confused me, probably because I've never found instructions for it. I think you're supposed to find and shoot all the creatures that looks like crabs and candybars, before they eat all the O-shaped creatures. If there's more to it than that, I don't know.
