Tom Hudson talks about his "Graphic Violence" assembly-language explosion code on his website, that he wrote for ANALOG Computing #8. He also used it with Planetary Defense: http://analog.klanky.com/8bit.htm

A fun game with a lot of variety! Tense, but requiring a lot of strategy to use your limited bullets and avoid the ponds. The bomb explosion effect was published as a machine language subroutine in one of the magazines of the time (Analog?) leading to a number of games exploiting it, most of them involving tunneling through dirt.
