I finally beat the game - and it took me only 32 years :-D --- The game consists of 24 levels. A new game starts player sporting the following stats: GENERAL STATS - MAX HEALTH 15 - HEALTH (the same as MAX HEALTH) - FOOD 2 - GOLD 0 SPELLS - HEAL 1 - TELEPORT 1 - FIREBALL 1 EQUIPMENT - ARMOR leather - WEAPON handaxe As the game progresses, the player finds GOLD, FOOD, SPELLS and POTIONS randomly scattered thorughout the dungeon. Each level (followed by "Descending the stairs..." message) increases MAX HEALTH by 3 points. If player's HEALTH is the same as MAX HEALTH, it gets boosted, too. Collecting GOLD, FOOD & SPELLS happens automatically and their respective amounts can be viewed in INVENTORY. The player needs to watch out for "You're getting hungry." message, after which (in a few moves moves) he gets the "You're starving!" one, leaving only a few more moves to be made before dying of hunger. All POTIONS and EQUIPMENT found throughout the dungeon must be either taken (used / equipped) immediately, or they disappear (message: "It disappears with a >Poof!<"). When encountering an enemy (monsters), there are several levels of severity of both scoring and receiving a hit, each resulting in a different amount of health substracted: - nick - hit - strike - pound - whack - slam - crack - CLOBBER - PULVERIZE - DEVASTATE WEAPONS (sorted by strength) --- dagger handaxe mace sword mace +1 sword +1 scythe +1 sai +2 mace +2 sword +2 ARMOR (sorted by efficiency) --- leather padded ring mail scale mail chain mail bronze banded splint field plate mail POTIONS (example in-game functionality) --- green instantly TELEPORTs the player within the level message: n/a black decreases HEALTH message: "*PAIN* wrecks your body!") purple decreases the amount of FOOD message: "Your food rots!" red increases MAX HEALTH by a level (+3) message: "Your endurance has increased!" crystal does nothing message: "It's The Choice of a New Generation." "It's The Real Thing." "It's The UnPotion." blue increases / restores HEALTH message: "You feel much healthier." mauve summons a monster at player's position alternate: decreases HEALTH by a level (-3) [???]) Note: Apparently, the potions switch their respective functionalities with every new game.

I typed this one in from the Antic Magazine's LISTING pages and really enjoyed it.. Like D&D, but a solitary version on a computer. Excellent pass-time activity for a cold evening, while tucked into a warm blanket in front of my Atari 800 XL.. Later I tried the ST version, which is very good, too, but this one has got "it" :-)

Didn't know there was an Atari Rogue game before LARN. I knew we were the best!

Takes an awful long time to generate levels, but looks like it could be fun. Nothing like getting bullied by a weasel.
