On a Falcon,TRON needs to be moved from the auto folder, as it
crashes when auto-booted (in the same way as the Mega STE when
tron is run from anywhere...).
Introduction
============
This is a conversion of the old classic called Tron
Lightcycles. This was a game based to the film Tron. My
version of the game is written in STOS Basic and should run on
any colour ST with 1Mb or more of RAM. (It has been tested on
my TOS 1.0 1mb STFM, and also on my 4mb Falcon. It has also
been tested on a 4mb Mega STE, and does not work on this. Most
tests were performed on version < Tron v1.3, and so are not
definate that this is true.)
The object of the game is to survive longer than your
opponent, which can be either computer or human. (For two
player mode two joysticks are required.) You are killed when
you touch the trails that both you and your opponent leave
behind. These trails are always green (Player 1) and red
(Player 2). On some of the later levels there are barriers
which also kill you, and are show in the same colour as the
trails.
There are 11 rounds, and you must try to win as many of
these rounds as possible. Two player mode is recommended since
it is much more satisfying beating a human than the computer.
If you do not have two joysticks, it is recommended that you
disconnect your mouse anyway since it may send rogue signals
and be misinterpreted as a second joystick. (Although if you
play around with the mouse, it should stop)
Controls
========
Joystick 1 - Player 1
Joystick 2 - Player 2
H - 50/60 Htz (Either at the title
screen or when paused)
P - Pause
Q - Quit go or Exit to desktop
- Start game
Joystick Left/Right - Switch 1/2 player mode (title
screen.)
Tips
====
1. Do not get to cocky, if you try to show off you will tend
to kill yourself more often than not.
2. If you are running parallel to a trail in adjacent pixels
you are able to jump the line, but you must be in
adjacent pixels!! (This was originally a bug, but I left
it in because it requires skill to be able to do it
correctly.)
Disclaimer
==========
TRON is placed in the Public Domain, and as such, may be
copied and distributed freely, provided none of the files are
modified in any way. This includes ommiting any of the files
including this text file.
Although I have done my best to ensure that there are no bugs
in Tron, I cannot guarantee this. Tron never writes to disk,
and so I do not believe that any errors could be caused by
Tron, but, YOU USE THIS SOFTWARE AT YOU OWN RISK. I will not
take any responsibility for any damage caused.
I've found a bug, what shall I do?
==================================
If you find an undocumented feature (bug!) please write
to me describing what happened and what error code and line
number were reported (if any) at the address below. Also write
to me with any suggested modifications so that I can included
them in later versions of Tron. This may or may not be done as
I feel that 3/4 years is long enough on one game.
If you want the source code, then mail me. The code is not
exactly the cleanest code ever, but then, I was 15 when the
main engine was written.
On the interNET, I can be emailed at :- (as of Sept. 94)
jacquesa@cs.man.ac.uk
By snail mail, my address is :-
70 West Avenue
Oldfield Park

Avon
NOTE: this is NOT a term time address, so do not expect a
quick response during the academic term.
I hope that you enjoy this game! go away and play all of your
friends!!
STOS Error numbers:-
====================
2/8 - Out of memory (Have you got 1mb)
48 - File not found (One of the .MBKs cannot be found)
52 - Disc error.
Software used:-
===============
STOS - well obviously, since it is programmed in this.
Prosound Designer - for the samples.
Degas Elite - the background pictures.
Cyber Studio - to create the 3D animation.
Cyber Paint - just to add a little enhancement to the anim.
Thrax's Animation Tool - to play the anim on boot up.
Devpac ST 2 - to write that tiny .PRG runner program.
Loads of STOS extensions (STE, Maestro, Compactor, Compiler)
Forthcoming Programs (possibly)
===============================
Originally I planned to complete these programs, but since
getting a Falcon, I have abandoned them for other things. If
you are really desperate for one of these programs, then email
me, and I will send you a copy. I may finish Countdown, since
it does work quite well, and I have FINALLY got a dictionary
for it.
Countdown :- A conversion of the Channel 4 words and numbers
quiz. This is almost finished, but does need
some alterations
Asylum :- A futuristic arcade / adventure game. Dungeon
Master style first person perspective 3D. Nobody
else except for you in the game. SLOW on an 8Mhz
machine. (slowish on a Falcon!!!)
STOS Art? :- This was to be my first application. Half done
with nice user interface (on ST).

If someone has written an extension for STOS that uses the
Falcons hardware (256/TC sprites etc) I would be very
interested.
