 OPERATION GARFIELD
                               ==================

An STE ONLY game by Dave Brankin.

After reading the continual complaints about the complete lack of software
which utilizes the the advanced features of the STE I decided to write my own.
Oh, and I think that having a Blitter chip, DMA sound and extended colour
palette without the slightest idea of how to program any of them may also have
had something to do with it! It 'aint half a good way to learn...

Quick Start:
Operation Garfield is a straight forward shoot-em-up in the old Operation
Wolf/Thunderbolt vein. Double click on GARFIELD.PRG and hit F1 to play when
loading is finished. Use the mouse to move the cursor about the screen, RIGHT
mouse button to fire, LEFT mouse button on the right/left border scrolls extra-
fast.

Slow Start:
Follow the quick start guide, but read the rest of this document first
(fairly obvious I thought...)

512 STE owners:
Operation Garfield only just squeezes into a 1/2 meg of memory so remove
all memory resident programs (i.e. Desk accessories, Replacement file selectors
etc.) before running it. If the program still refuses to run or you don't
understand how to remove the resident programs follow the steps below. Newcomers
to the world of ST computing may find referring to the brown book that came with
the computer useful in carrying out the following.
1)Format a blank disk (either single or double sided - it doesn't matter)
2)Create a new folder in the root directory called AUTO
3)Copy the file GARFIELD.PRG into the folder AUTO
4)Copy the file GARFIELD.DAT into the root directory
5)Reset the computer with your new disk in the drive and the game will run
          automatically.

The Plot:
Programmer gets disk of Public Domain Clip-
Art from BYTEBACK PD and writes
game around it... Alternatively: Earth is being invaded from outerspace by
aliens who believe (after intercepting TV broadcasts) that earthlings will
forgive cute furry animals animals anything. Thus deceived they disguise
themselves as cuddly car window animals.

The Program:
385k of uncompressed code (Split into 2 files and compressed to ~195k)
130k of sampled sound (all played through the DMA - no loss of speed)
     Sampled background tune
     Full 8 way multi-speed SMOOTH scrolling \ All pixel perfect,fast &
Big, Big Sprites & multi-hit nasties / blittered.
     Pixel perfect collision detection
Smart Bombs, First Aid Kits, Ammo Clips & Laker Jokes.
     "In Game" 'Set Preferences'
Options to save hi-scores to disk only comes up if you have got a new
          hi-score.
Has a cheat mode (which is totally unguessable!)
     Both Vector & Binary fonts
Use of keyboard or mouse to enter name in hiscore table
50/60Hz selectable (If you can, use 60Hz else circles are not circular!)
Option to turn that damn tune and/or siren and/or sound FX off.

PD: THIS PROGRAM IS PD WITH THE USUAL DISCLARES (NOT FIT FOR ANY IMPLIDED
PURPOSES, MAY BE FREELY DISTRUBITED AS LONG AS ALL THE ASSOCIATED FILES ARE
INCLUDED (garfield.prg, garfield.dat & read_me.asc) ETC.) AND THE ONE
FOLLOWING NON-PD RULE: IF ANY MAGAZINE PUTS THIS ON THEIR COVER DISKS I WANT
DOSH, DOSH & MORE DOSH! (Just enough for a private island or two... OK, I'll
settle for enough to cover a couple or rounds...).

Programmer Note:
Well, if you've read this far I think you deserve to know the real reason I
wrote this game. I simply think Garfield is too cute to live!
