              HYSULA
              ÿÿÿÿÿÿ
    (SPIELRAUM saga part III)

INTRODUCTION
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
HYSULA is a game played from a
first-person 3D perspective. It is a
sequel to games available in the
public domain called  SPIELRAUM  and
KAKRIVS. It is not essential to
have played either SPIELRAUM or
KAKRIVS before playing HYSULA, but
if you have, you will have an idea
of the basic control system.
HOWEVER, those that HAVE played
either of the preceding games should
note that there are certain new
functions and changes in HYSULA, and
are advised to review the control
system, laid out below (after the
background notes and objectives).

BACKGROUND
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
These notes are primarily for those
who have not played the previous
games in the series. If you have not
but would like to, you can order
direct from KEYSOFT at the address
given at the end of this document.
You can still read these notes, as
they will not affect your enjoyment
of the previous games.
       *          *          *
At first, it had seemed to be just a
spot of fun. Just find your way out
of the SPIELRAUM and solve a few
puzzles along the way. Okay, so you
got out eventually, but some of
those 'puzzles' were downright
deadly!
It was then that you began to see
that beneath the seeming innocence
of the SPIELRAUM was something far
more sinister.
For before you stood a device. You
should have expected it to be
strange to you, but somehow you
knew that it belonged to you. You
knew it to be a dimensionally
trancendental spacetime travel
machine, but you could not seem to
recall how to operate it!
Someone, or some THING,you realised,
must have erased part of your
memory and placed you within the
SPIELRAUM with the intention of
delaying or killing you.
But why would someone want to trap
you? Or delay you? What sinister
purpose could they have?
From there, there was only one path
to take. You entered the machine to
try to re-discover it's operating
procedures. If you could do this,
perhaps you would discover clues
that could lead you on the trail to
the answers you sought, perhaps to
the very one that had entrapped you
within the SPIELRAUM!!
          *      *      *
Well, you DID discover how to
operate the machine, and it took you
to a world inhabited by a warlike
robot race known as the KAKRIVS.
There, at least, you found ONE
answer, for there you discovered a
person who seemingly is your
nemesis. It appeared likely that
this person was the one responsible
for placing you within the
SPIELRAUM, and erasing your memory!
However, she spoke to you from
behind a force-shield, and by the
time you had fought your way past
her elaborate puzzle-zones,she had
left, leaving you only taunting
messages and another data disk for
your machine. You had to follow, for
There were still many answers to be
found, like why do you even HAVE
access to a spacetime travel device?
           *      *      *
Using the disk, you arrived on a new
world. This world. In the land of
HYSULA.

OBJECTIVES
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
The aim of HYSULA is simple. You
must try to find this MELANIA, the
woman you found on the world of the
KAKRIVS, and try to learn more about
yourself. This is the primary
objective. Along the way, you may
well find there are other problems
that need to be solved.
Incidentally, you may well find that
even if you Do find Melania, there
is something else that you must do
in order to actually finish the game!

THE CONTROL SYSTEM
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
If you have played FREESCAPE games
before,or KEYSOFT 3D environment
games, you will be aware of basic
control systems, but HYSULA has
several new features and changes, so
please read the following carefully.
SAVE/LOAD FACILITY
You can save or load the game at any
time by clicking on the appropriate
icon in the top right-hand corner of
the screen, but you will have to
keep a note of any position names
saved, as no file selector appears.
Save files can be any name of up to
eight letters.
CENTER SIGHTS
The "sights" in the center of the
screen can be turned off or back on
using the asterisk key on the
keypad, or by clicking on the K of
the keysoft logo.
TEXT INFORMATION
The information box on the screen
will provide you with occasional
textual information, which will
usually clear itself shortly.
VIRTUAL WORLD INTERFACE
You will notice that the mouse
pointer changes as you move it
between the border and the view
area.
The pointer becomes a 'cross-hair'
within the view area. This enables
you to interact with the 3D
environment in a limited fashion as
if you were really there.
     OBJECT IDENTIFICATION MODE
Pointing to an object and pressing
the LEFT mouse button may reveal
more information about the item, for
example to identify an object if it
should be obvious to your in-game
persona what it is. NOT available on
ALL objects!
     OBJECT INTERACTION MODE
Pointing to objects in the view area
and pressing the RIGHT mouse button
will initiate object interaction.
This could be the action of
'turning' a door handle, or 'picking
up' an object. If you have picked up
an object, that object will vanish
from the view window and appear in
your INVENTORY (see below)
*this function has changed
since KAKRIVS (version 1.0), and the
new system is detailed later.*
VIRTUAL WORLD CONVENTIONS
A couple of standard devices used
within the view area throughout the
game are A) the depiction of
doorways as door-sized black
rectangles (walking into one takes
you into the next area) B)notices
and messages, which appear as white
rectangles of various sizes. The
message will appear when interaction
takes place, and will usually clear
of it's own accord.
MOVEMENT
Of course, you will want to be able
to move through the wonderous
virtual 3D environments, and that's
what the array of pale blue boxes in
the bottom right of the border are
for. It is designed to be intuitive
to operate, and if you picture it as
a smaller version of the view area,
you won't go far wrong. See
immediately below.

NEW FUNCTIONS AND CHANGES
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
This part is particularly essential
to the players of previous parts of
the SPIELRAUM saga, as it highlights
new controls, and changes since
earlier games in the series.
INVENTORY
You still have a fully interactive
inventory, but this has been changed
somewhat since KAKRIVS. I feel this
is more effective and easier to use.
Before you can use objects on other
objects in the view window (just for
example a key that you have picked
up on a keyhole), you have to select
the correct item from your inventory
using the keys outlined above. (the
'?' key is just by the top right of
the space bar) then click on the
object you with to interact with
using the RIGHT  mouse button.
THE ONLY EXCEPTION TO THIS IS IF
TRYING TO USE OBJECTS AT A DISTANCE
(for example throwing something)
In this case, you click using the
LEFT button. Normal (Right-click)
activation distance is approximately
what you would be able to reach from
your current position in the Virtual
world, including 'leaning over'.
NOTE that when an item is taken from
you (i.e. given away or "used"), the
inventory slot says EMPTY. IT IS
ONLY THAT PARTICULAR SLOT THAT IS
EMPTY! Do not panic and think that
you have dropped everything! Every
time you press the Inventory control
key, the inventory will cycle
through the slots, stopping at the
next full one, eventually rotating
back through the same articles.
Thus, by repeated presses of the
key, you can see every item in your
possession. The inventory will only
let you use one item at a time.
CHARACTER INTERACTION
With this feature,you can 'converse'
with any characters that you happen
to meet, if they want to!
*The method of operation is slightly
different to that used in KAKRIVS*
Point and click on the character's
upper chest (below the neck) always
using the LEFT mouse button first
for talking. After this, you may get
different information by using the
RIGHT mouse button. As you click,
you will see the character's speech
appear in the information box.
It is also possible to interact with
or try to influence characters by
giving them items. You must have the
item selected in the INVENTORY slot
and then click on the character
(hand or body, usually, if visible)
If they are able to interact with
you, they will usually say something
to let you know. If nothing happens,
you may assume they are ignoring you
or are not interested in what you
have to offer.
HEALTH BAR *new feature*
This is completely red when at full
level. As you get injured, it goes
down. Sometimes very quickly, so be
ready with your FAST MOVE KEYS to
back off if you think you may be
walking into danger! This new
feature enables the player-character
to see exactly how long he's got
before he snuffs it!

There is no immediate danger or time
limit in HYSULA, thus giving you a
chance to experiment with the
controls.

HINTS, TIPS an' stuff
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
Always save before trying something
that might be dangerous.
If attacked, run for cover! Don't
waste time looking for the source of
the attack if you can't see it - get
behind cover, and look around
carefully once the sound stops!
If you get stuck (unlikely, I feel)
try examining your inventory and
think of unusual ways the items
might be used, or think of people
you have met and places you have
seen. Might they be worth a second
visit?
If you get REALLY stuck, you can get
all the help you need from KEYSOFT -
but only if you have paid the
registration fee!

AUTHOR'S NOTES
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
HYSULA IS SHAREWARE. By all means
copy it and pass it on, but you MUST
include this document, intact, and
if you use the program extensively
and enjoy it, then PLEASE, PLEASE,
PLEASE register your copy! If ya do
register, not only will ya make a
progammer very happy, but you'll get
any help ya need with the game, AND
a couple of freebies, too!
YEAH! Ya get's ta choose anuvver
KEYSOFT disc at no charge, an' as if
that's not enough, there's more! Mel
(that's MELANIA, a character in the
virtual world of HYSULA) will tell
you more if you catch up with her.
But if you register before you get
that far, you'll find out anyway!
Registration of the game only costs
a fiver, and a return of even ONE
fiver would be encouragement to
write more sequels to release to the
P.D. libraries! Make any cheques or
postal orders payable to P. Ward,
NOT Keysoft. Thanks. Oh, yeah! Nice
crispy fivers are also acceptable,
but no coins please: they tend to
find their way out of envelopes!
Also, if the new disk you recieve is
also shareware, an' ya register that,
ya can get another free disk again!
and again! Good, innit? Plus, the
more registrations I get, the more
and even better an' tastier freebies
I'll be able to offer in the future!
Apart from this, I happen to be very
proud of the way HYSULA has turned
out, and think it stands up well to
previous FREESCAPE games, even the
professional ones!
The inventory routine was written by
J. Hayes on the Amiga. Thanks, 3D
KIT USER GROUP!
