The story so far....
A group of terrorists have stolen some of the most modern
submarines in the world. The terrorists want to use the submarines
to sink your ships. It is your task to find these submarines and
if possible destroy them, before they destroy your ships. To carry
out this task you fly a LOCKHEED S-3A VIKING.
How to play the game:
After the game has loaded, the title screen appears.
While the music is playing press the spacebar to continue. You can
then select the level of difficulty. Press the funtion keys to se-
lect a level and start the game.
The game itself is fully mouse-controlled. At the bottom left of
the screen you see a couple of arrows. Clicking on these arrows
with the left mouse button moves the plane on the map.
The white vertical line on the map indicates the ' save area'. To
the left of this line there are no submarines. You can also refuel
when you are to the left of this line (see below).
The M.A.D.
As soon as you move your plane you will here a sound and at the
top right of the screen a line appears on the green display. This
is the magnetic anomaly detector (M.A.D.). The M.A.D. is able to
detect small distortions of the earth's magnetic fields. These
distortions are caused by submarines. If the line on the M.A.D.
display is straight it means that no distortions (no submarines)
are detected. If however the line is distorted, a submarine is in
the vicinity. This means that the submarine is in a square above,
below, left or right of the square your plane is in. By moving
your plane around while looking at the M.A.D. and by using your
brain a bit you can determine the exact square the submarine is
in.
While you're moving around make sure you don't move on the square
where you think the submarine is in. If you do, your plane will be
shot down by a missile launched from the submarine.
By clicking on 'M' in the middle of the direction arrows, with the
left mouse button, you can toggle the M.A.D. on or off. Wether the
M.A.D. is on or off is indicated with a light at the top middle of
the screen.
The sonobuoys
When you think you've found the square the submarine is in, it is
time to drop a sonobuoy. The sonobuoys are used to determine the
exact position of the submarine.
To drop a sonobuoy click the RIGHT mousebutton. A light at the
bottom right of the screen starts to flash (to turn it off click
the right button again). On the bottom middle display you see the
word sonobuoy appear. Next move your plane on the square where you
think the submarine is in.
If the submarine isn't in that specific square nothing happens,
although you loose the sonobuoy you've dropped.
If you've found the submarine however a voice shouts 'I got him, I
got him' and a couple of dots appear on the round display at the
bottom of the screen. You also get your sonobuoy back (look at the
number at the bottom right of the screen).
Next come the depth charges.
The depth charges
After you have seen the enemy I.D. click one of the mouse buttons.
The left control panel scrolls down and the depth charge panel
scrolls up. By clicking on the left/right arrows on the depth
charge panel you change the direction your plane is flying in.
To drop a depth charge click on one of the F's. Before you do this
however you must adjust the depth at which the depth charge must
explode. Click on the slider bar with the left button, hold the
button down and move the mouse up or down.
On the bottom centre display you see the number of hits required
to sink the sub and the time left before the sub disappears.
Enemy view
While you're trying to find and destroy the submarines, the
submarines are trying to destroy your ships. At irregular
intervals the game switches to enemy view and you can watch one of
your ships being sunk.
Refueling
When you're plane's moving around it consumes fuel of course.
Look at the bottom middle display for the amount of fuel left. To
refuel move your plane to the left of the vertical white line on
the map. The plane is then refueled.
To move your plane a bit faster you can toggle the M.A.D. off and
then move to the left of the vertical line via the squares you've
been before.
Game over
The game is over when:
- all submarines have been found
- all your ships have been sunk
- you are out of planes
- you are out of sonobuoys
- you switch off your computer
