Welcome to the wild west! Grab a chair, choose a table in the saloon and sit
yourself down for some five card draw poker. You'll have a chance to play
against some of the most treacherous, conniving and smoothest characters north
of the Rio Grande! I'm not talking about two dimensional computer simulations!
These are real folks, just like your irritating neighbor across the street. So
pour yourself a drink, relax and let's separate the real poker players from
the cattle rustlers!

Coyote Dave's Poker requires a monochrome monitor. It will run on a 520ST
without any special effects but is best appreciated with at least one megabyte
of memory. I've used only the best digital sound effects imported from Texas!
The game is fully configurable and is freeware.

Getting started
---------------
Double-click on COYOTE.PRG and soon you will be presented with the playing
area. You will be shown the entire deck of 52 cards face up (so you can check
for marked cards) and then after a short musical interlude you can enter your
name and begin the game.

You play poker against four other humans. Each person has a playing area on
the table. There are five seperate areas from top to bottom. Cards are dealt
on the left and responses can be viewed on the right of each rectangular area.
In the upper right corner is a dialog box showing the current bet and the
total pot accumulated within each deal. To the far right of each players
response box is a running tally of how much money is in each individuals pot.
To the left of each response box is a smaller box that indicates ANTE,
STARTING PLAYERS, WINNERS and TIES.

First JACK starts. Each player will be thrown a card face up until someone is
dealt a JACK. This is the player that will be first dealt, first to bet, and
first to ante.

Now everyone ANTES one dollar. You will see the letter A appear in the box to
the left of each players response area, each players pot goes down a dollar
and the total pot goes up.

Hubert the dealer (he's off to the right of the screen so you can't see him)
now throws each player five cards, one at a time. The player first dealt is
always indicated by a square inside the left side of the response box. Players
will take turns being first on subsequent deals.

You are at the bottom of the screen. All five of your cards will be flipped
face up but don't worry, none of the other players can see them.

Each player decides to BET, CHECK, FOLD, RAISE or CALL in correct order and
their response is displayed in their corresponding box.

Overview of poker rules
-----------------------
I'm not going to teach you how to play poker, ask your father, but here are
Coyote Dave's Rules:

                           Maximum bet is $5.00
(maximum bet increases by $1.00 everytime a player goes broke)

Each player antes $1.00 at the beginning of a hand
(ante goes up $1.00 everytime a player goes broke)

                       One draw, three cards maximum

                              No short raises
(raises must be at least as much as the bet)

                             Three raises maximum

                    Bicycle is a low straight (A 1 2 3 4)

You can continue using money from your pocket even after your pot is at 0
but only for that one hand. If you lose and end up negative...game over!

Now it's your turn to bet
-------------------------
After each player has bet, then it's your turn. Player responses are dark when
first declared and then the text lightens as the other players follow so you
can still read what everyone did. You will now see a set of buttons replace
your response box at the bottom of the screen. On the far right are two
configuration buttons, OK Corral and The Saloon, we'll cover these later on...

The other buttons are straight forward and let you FOLD, BET, RAISE or CHECK
depending upon what the other players have done before you. Click the RIGHT
mouse button to increase your bet/raise (or use the up and down arrow keys).
Click within any of the buttons to activate your choice (or press F for fold,
R for raise, C for check/call and B for bet). No second chances, you play
what you press!

Throwing cards away
-------------------
After you and all the poker players finish betting it's time to discard. You
can throw away between 0 and 3 cards. Click the LEFT mouse over top of a card
to flip it over. You can continue clicking the mouse to flip it back if you
make a mistake. You can also use the numbered keys on the keyboard (1-5).
Click the RIGHT mouse button to deal new cards in place of the ones thrown
away or hit RETURN (if you don't want any cards just press the right mouse
button all by itself).

Play continues after all players have discarded. The last bet is much the same
as the first bet described above.

Declaring a winner
------------------
After the last bet each player flips over his or her cards and a winner is
declared. The winning hand flashes, the response box describes the hand and an
asterisk appears in the left side of the response box. The winner gets all
money in the pot and any players below zero are removed from the game.

In the event of a tie, the win goes to the next highest card. In the event of
an exact tie, the pot is split. Ties are indicated by a T in the left side of
the response box.

Press the space bar to begin the next hand or press UNDO to quit.

Help
----
Any time it is your turn or at the end of a hand you can press the HELP key
and get some guidance from folks looking over your shoulder at the table. If
you are new to poker than this is a good way to learn the game.

The OK Corral
--------------
This configuration dialog is available when it is your turn. Click the button
to the far right and the OK Corral will appear. Here you can:

* Select your favorite design for the back of the cards

* Adjust the speed of game play

* Turn off the amazing sound effects

* Change the starting pot from $50 to $100 or $150

* Load a new table of players from disk
(each table file uses the extension .POK and contains four different
poker players. If you load another table, the game will re-start)

* Save these defaults to disk for the next time you run this program
(if you save after loading an alternate table, this new table will become
the default whenever you run the program)

Click the RIGHT mouse button to exit the OK Corral dialog.

The Saloon
-----------
Here's a bit of whimsy for you! If you are losing, why not pour your friends
at the table a couple of drinks. Be careful. Tipsy poker players are not
always bad poker players. You could be in for some wild poker playing!

Saving your game for later
--------------------------
If you press UNDO during a hand then you will be asked if you want to re-start
the entire game. Pressing UNDO after a hand is finished will give you the
option to:

QUIT WITHOUT SAVING THE CURRENT GAME

QUIT AND SAVE THIS GAME TO DISK

                        OR CANCEL AND CONTINUE PLAYING

Saved games are stored with every aspect intact including players, totals,
pots, configurations and personalities. Tipsy players will sober up by the
next time you re-start a game.

Re-starting an old game is easy, just enter your name at the beginning of play
spelled exactly the same way as last time. You will then be asked if you want
to resume play or start a new game.

Hints, tips and reminders
-------------------------
It goes without saying that the object of any poker game is to clean out every
other player at the table. If you clean out everyone with a $50 pot maybe it's
time to try a $100 pot! Even if you lose you will still have the option of
watching your friends continue playing!

Remember, each player at each table (whether default or on disk) has his or
her own personality. They have mood swings, they make stupid mistakes, they
bluff and they seek revenge. These are real people, what did you expect? Wipe
that stupid grin away and put on your best "poker face" when playing Coyote
Dave's Poker. Each .POK table file contains over 130 parameters that together
define players personalities, strengths, weaknesses and intelligence. A
digital slice of life!

You can edit CDP13.DAT and remove the coyote graphic from the table if it
bothers you.

This game is freeware so make a copy for all of your friends, place it on your
local bulletin board or sell it through your user group.

                                        Have fun,

                                        Coyote Dave
