Prologue

The smell of death hung over the camp like a thick mist. Moaning bodies of the wounded lay haphazardly across the clearing as a few medics frantically tend to their needs. Others, who were beyond help were laid out underneath the shade of the jungle. Their glazed eyes stared blankly into the distance, as they patiently awaited death's cold embrace. A large pile of lifeless bodies were stacked by the brook, waiting for identification and burial. There was so much pain and death around that the young rebel could barely stand it. He looked up from the blood covered ground and could hear the charismatic voice of Vegel Klein, the minister of propaganda, as he was giving a speech to some of the men. Janson slung his Zollanti Single Shot Repeater around his shoulder and walked over.

"The Federation murderers had come to the planet to bring peace! We bring you no harm, the lying politicians had claimed. They came here to protect us! Protect us? From whom? The Zollanti? Ourselves? No... I'll tell you from whom, from the truth! Listen to me brothers... a great time has come upon us... Our new brothers of the struggle, the Zollanti have agreed to give us even more funds and supplies to aid us in our noble struggle for Independence. Soon my brothers we shall be free! Free! Free at last!"

Janson sat amongst the others, listening to the old colonist as the others began to cheer and clap excitedly. Vegel Klein was one of the earliest pioneers who colonized Freeport. Listening to his speech, made Janson feel like he was doing the right thing. But seeing all those wounded and dying men back in the middle of the camp was too much. The Federation had real weapons. Real training, nothing like what the rebellion had. The only thing we have going for us, the young lad thought, was bodies. A countless supply of new warm bodies, here son take a rifle and kill a marine.

Janson jerked backwards when a hand reached out and grabbed his shoulder. "What the-"

"Brother Janson it is time for the landing. Come I have a surprise for you." proclaimed the Corporal.

Janson quickly jumped to his feet. "What is it Corporal?"

"A great honor has befallen us." he said with a glimmer in his eyes. "General Agia is due to pay us a visit!"

"General Agia!" Janson shouted as he buttoned his tunic. "Here? To see us?"

     "Yes, now come on."

The two men ran off down the trail. Images of the famous General flashed before his eyes. General Agia, the master architect of the rebellion was going to come here. Something big must be in the works. The two men must have run for a kilometer. Janson kept pushing his tired legs, fueled by the excitement that was soon to await him. As the two rebels ran down the path they finally came up to a large clearing in the jungle. Janson immediately came to an abrupt halt. Before him, lined in perfect formation was row after row of hundreds of grav tanks. As far as his eyes could see nothing but Zollanti tanks. The Corporal stopped and looked back at the bewildered young lad.

"Come, you haven't seen anything yet."

Before he could turn around the two looked up into the night sky. A loud reverberating sound bellowed downward from the heavens. "Hurry before it's too late!"

The two continued down the path. Janson couldn't help but glance over to his right as they passed row upon row of gleaming new grav tanks. Zollanti crew members sat amongst their weapons waiting for orders. Janson almost plowed into the back of the Corporal as they came to a stop. There in another clearing, about a hundred meters they saw it. A large landing had been cut out of the jungle. The echoing sounds of the ship's engines filled his ears as he looked up. Floating down like a huge monolith, was the Zollanti ship. Janson had never seen a ship this big. It had to have been a half a kilometer wide! Janson covered his ears as the jungle suddenly came to life as hot gusts of wind howled around them.

"The General has arrived!" he shouted. Janson didn't know what to say. Victory would soon be theirs.

Chapter One

The garrison was quite. The sounds of a lone guard's footsteps echoed down the hallway. You lean back in your chair and look over the several mud covered tapes. The top secret data is now secured. Steiner and the others are safe. The sudden urge to sleep slowly begins to over power you when your ears hear the sound of someone running towards your office. Reaching down you place each of the data packs inside the safe.

Top Sergeant Steiner walks in dressed in his skivvies. "Sir do you got a minute?"

     "Don't you ever sleep Sergeant?"

"Only when I have to. We got problems, the admiral is on the line waiting for you, priority message.

"Okay transfer it in here, I'm too tired to walk to Operations." You reach over and type your security clearance into the terminal. A second later the picture of Admiral Williamson appears on the flat plasma screen.

"Commander, it is good to see you. Job well done lad. We just received your post action report."

"Yes sir, thank you sir. The men performed well."

"A baptism under fire will usually bring out the best in a man."

     "Yes sir, you're right."

"I'm afraid to say it, but in about forty eight hours, a state of war is about to be announced between the Federation and the Zollanti Empire. It's official son. Our Secret Listening Post has just picked up several ships in your sector. From information handed to me several hours ago, one of the Zollanti ships is in orbit around your planet as we speak. It may have already landed as far as I know. A large Zollanti Fleet is crossing the Neutral Zone as we speak. Their destination is Azarius. We are dispatching the fifth fleet to your sector immediately. They should be ready to leave in a matter of hours."

The words hit you like a ton of bricks. A state of war? A Zollanti fleet approaching? Your facial expression must have betrayed you. Admiral Williamson smiled slightly then spoke.

"Relax Commander, I know it's a lot to swallow, but we are on our way. You will have to hold on until then."

     "How long?"

"Seventeen days. Maybe a day or two less."

"Commander, we won't last half a week, we got only twenty two men here on Azarius, half of which are from my original unit. The men are exhausted, you can't expect them to defend an entire planet."

"No I don't Commander, I only expect them to do their duty. Obviously the Zollanti are sending in reinforcements to aid the rebels. You must defend Freeport from falling into their hands. Do whatever it takes. We will need Freeport's starport facilities intact when the fifth fleet arrives. You can't let the enemy take Freeport. We will maintain this secured frequency until the reinforcements arrive. Good luck son."

You stare at the blank screen for several minutes. How does the Admiral expect me to defend an entire city with only a handful of tired marines?

"Are you thinking what I am?" you ask the Sergeant in a whispered tone.

"Yeah, we got our work cut out for us don't we."

"Assemble all Squad Leaders and have them meet me in Operations in one quarter of an hour."

"Will do, can I get anything for you."

"A regiment of Special Forces will do nicely."

"Sorry, we're fresh out of meat." he replies with a school boy's smirk.

Chapter Two

The quite whisper of the jungle came to life as a mass of Zollanti and Rebel soldiers sat patiently amongst the clearing waiting for the General to appear. A hushed silence instantly spread from the far end of the horseshoe shaped clearing as a lone figure approached the makeshift podium. General Agia, the seventy two year old inspiration of the rebellion, slowly made his way to the center of the group. Janson couldn't believe his very eyes, the general was so small, so fragile of a man. How could this man be the hero we had conjured up over the years? Could this really be our fearless leader? Our salvation, our final hope of freedom?

"Warriors of Azarius hear my words!" his aged voiced echoed through the amplifiers. "I have come here to lead us to victory! Ours is a noble cause. We came here to Azarius to colonize a new planet, a new world, a new home. Now the Federation wishes to make slaves out of us. They want to build military installations on our planet. They conspire against us and the Zollanti Empire. I have just come from Regal Four, the capitol of the Zollanti Empire. I have met with the emperor and have gained his trust. He has pledged his support for our noble cause. Our Zollanti brothers have come to help us rid the Federation from our beloved planet... Victory will be ours at last."

The crowd of soldiers cheered in unison. The general patiently waited for the silence before he began. "Soon my warriors, we will be launching our final push for liberation and crush Freeport for all the Federated Planets to see, independence is finally ours for the taking!"

Again the crowd clapped and cheered. The general raised his tired voice over the noise and shouted out. "Go forth, fight bravely and give your lives for your families, ours is only a small sacrifice, like the drops of dew in the forest bed, may your lives be forever remembered... Victory is ours for the taking. May all the eyes of the Federation look up to our brave example. Freedom is at hand!"

The crowd of rebels stood up and cheered in a wild frenzy. Janson soon found himself patting the corporal on the back. For a brief moment he felt that he could defeat the Federation single handedly. "When do we get to fight? I'm ready!"

"Relax brother Janson, your time is near. I have chosen you especially to aid me in a top secret mission."

Janson could hardly believe his ears. The anxiety was too much to bare. "I am honored Corporal."

"Later today we will be going to Freeport."

"Freeport?" Janson could hardly hide his glee. He had never traveled to Freeport, the capital of Azarius. Being born and raised in the highlands, hundreds of kilometers away, he had always wanted to travel to Freeport. He had dreamed of the day leading the victory parade into the city. But now he was going to be given an opportunity of a life time!"

"Come, we have a very important task ahead of us. We have been chosen to destroy the starport."

Chapter Three

You can't believe it is already happening. First they sneak in rebel sappers into the city, under your very nose. Then thirty seven civilians were killed and wounded in the attack. Already reports of hundreds of civilian refugees are fleeing from the city itself. The rebels obviously didn't intend to capture the starport, no they were sent in to install fear into the city. Who knows where they would attack next.

"Are all the entrances into the city covered?"

"Yes sir," replied the Sergeant, sensing your frustration. "We got all five roads leading to Freeport under guard with two men each."

"That leaves us with ten men. The question is, where and when do they strike next?"

"We have to assume that they are already in the city." stated Sergeant Farber.

"That makes good sense," you reply as you walk over to the holomap of the city. "If you were a rebel terrorist, what would be your next target?"

"The hospital or commerce center?" suggested the colored Sergeant.

"Perhaps the power plant or radio station. For that matter what if they attacked one of Dynamics processing plants?" summarized Sergeant Steiner.

"What did you say?" asked Krantz.

     "What the power plant?"

     "No after that."

     "I dunno, the radio station?"

"Yes that's it!" suggested Sergeant Krantz.

"You might be right," you comment as you sit back down. "They could strike anywhere. I doubt they'd try an assault on one of the processing plants, they could have done that months ago. They're after this city. They probably want the plants intact so they can still keep them operational once they take over the planet."

"If they take over the planet." corrected Steiner.

"No, there's no ifs about it. If you got to think like a rebel, then defeat is not a possibility. For God's sake Top, they got to know our strength. They must have us outnumbered one thousand to one."

"That never stopped us in the past. Don't you remember the Belzar Raid. We were outnumbered ten thousand to one."

"Those were bugs we were up against, not soldiers carrying laser rifles."

"Okay, so they fought on all eights, we were still outnumbered and we didn't let it stop us."

"Frantz has a point Top. There's no way in hell we can defend the city if we don't know what the enemy's disposition is. Assemble a very small team, and have Corporal Vim lead this operation. I want our best Scouts on this mission. We need to send a recon team deep into the outskirts of the city and find out what the enemy is up to...

     "Consider it done."

Chapter Four

You don't have too many choices left. The Zollanti are on the planet in full force. There must be an entire division of Zollanti outside the city. In a matter of hours they could completely surround Freeport and swallow everything in its path. There's no possible way you can be expected to defend Freeport. Nearly all the citizens have left. You look outside your window at the barren streets. There's no where to run. Or is there?

"Sergeant, I don't think we stand an ice cubes chance in hell to hold Freeport. Do you agree?"

     "Yeah, I think you're right."

"And it looks like we have nowhere to go if we pull out, right?"

"Not unless you plan on living in the jungle somewhere."

"Why do the rebels want Freeport?"

Steiner looked puzzled and thought about that for a minute. "Prestige?"

"Perhaps... but what if they are tired of living in the jungle. Perhaps they want Freeport because there's running water, electricity and a warm bed?"

Steiner smiled and leaned forward. "Go on."

"What if we destroyed the bridge leading to the city? The Zollanti would be forced to travel almost sixty kilometers north to cross here in the highlands, if they wanted to bring in their armor support." you say running your finger across the map. "That could buy us almost three or four days."

     "Yeah, but that's not seventeen."

"True, but that would give us enough time to destroy the starport, the power plant, the hospital, as well as every major building inside Freeport."

"You lost me sir. Why would we do that?"

"Deny the enemy a victory. They want Freeport. We'll give it to them. But when we're done with it, they won't want it."

Steiner slaps you on the back. "Okay I'm with you, but one thing... Where are we going to go?"

"The only place where they don't know we can go to. The Secret Listening post. The station is somewhere here in the highlands."

"Okay fine, but won't we be crossing paths with the Zollanti Tanks?"

"Yeah, but that's the last place they'd be suspecting us to show up. We skirt around the tanks unseen, then head for the mountains. By the time they hit Freeport, we will be long gone and Freeport will be smoldering ruins."

"I think that's the only thing we can do. Of course we could sit around here and make one last stand."

"You always were the romantic. I think-"

Sergeant Farber ran into the room garbed in full battle gear. "Sir we got trouble."

     "What's up Sergeant."

"Several rebels have taken the Radio Station. They are broadcasting liberation bullshit on all frequencies. They're telling other planets that it is time for all to rise up against the Federation's iron grip of power."

     "Are you serious?" asked Steiner.

"Yeah, they're broadcasting on all frequencies, interstellar channels as well."

"Shit, that's all we need a bunch of fanatics preaching on the airwaves."

"We'll see about that. Do you have a team ready?" you ask looking over to Farber. The Sergeant nodded his head in confirmation. "Good, do whatever it takes. Destroy the freakin' building if you have to. I want them off the airwaves. Take no prisoners Sergeant, this is war."

Chapter Five

The room is silent. It smells of clotted blood and disinfectant. Sergeant Farber lies motionless on the bed before you. His blood covered face stares up towards the infirmary ceiling. He is dying. There's nothing you or anybody could do for him, but make his last few minutes as comfortable as possible. You reach down and take his band. For a moment he glances over to you. His eyes however seem to look through you as if you were made of glass.

     "Sergeant, it's me."

     "We got them Commander..."

"Yes I know. You did well. A job well done."

"We took out that transmitter... didn't we?"

"You sure did Sergeant. You took them all out."

"You got to win... you got to win sir. I don't want to die for nothin..."

"You won't Sergeant. I can promise you that."

Suddenly his grip tightens around your hand. "Remember me... remember us all..."

Before you can reply his grip slackens and slips back to the bedside. You look up at Steiner and Krantz. "Get a burial detachment together and bury him with full honors."

"I'll do it personally sir." replied Krantz.

"Steiner, get a team together, I want to take out that damn bridge tonight before its too late."

Chapter Six

Now that the bridge is destroyed, you managed to buy your men several more days. The question is, do you destroy Freeport and make a run for the mountains or do you stand and fight? Part of you wants to stand and fight to the bitter end. But can you make that decision for the rest of the men? If you stand and fight it would mean suicide for sure. If you destroy Freeport's facilities, you mange to deny the enemy a victory. If you succeed in escaping Freeport and make it to the listening post hidden in the mountains, you can help the Fifth Fleet by supplying them logistical information during the invasion. But what if the rebels discover your location and learn of the listening post? Would you be jeopardizing the Federation's Listening post? The questions seem overwhelming, the answers wouldn't come easy.

You pace back and forth in front of the terminal. Your prewritten report is already typed into the computer waiting for you to hit the enter key. You calculate that the scrambled message would take several days to reach Admiral Williamson. You could reach him directly, but chances are, one of the Zollanti ships will intercept the transmission and discover your plan. You have no choice. Looking down at the screen you read the message one last time and hit the enter key. The decision is made. There is no turning back now...

To: Admiral Williamson
From: Commander of Azarius Garrison Azarius XA-7

Re: Situation has turned for the worse. Estimate enemy strength to be comprised of several Zollanti infantry divisions supported by one armor division. Rebels have managed to completely surround Freeport. Starport facilities have been damaged beyond repair by terrorists. Radio Station has been resecured and transmitter dismantled. We have destroyed the bridge leading to the city, buying us time more time. I have given the order to withdrawal from Freeport. We will destroy all facilities including the power plant. We will deny the enemy a true victory in hopes of escaping to the highlands in search of the listening post. We will try to contact Federation Command on this same frequency upon destination. God save us all.

You turn around as Sergeant Steiner enters the room. "Sir, they're trying to cross the river!"

"Damn, don't they ever quit?" you ask as you walk over to the holomap.

"They don't seem to take no for an answer."

     "That's because they don't think we're serious."

Steiner laughed as he picked up a nearby laser rifle and handed it to you. "I got Alpha team ready to transport over to the river. Bravo team is waiting for you in the lobby."

     "Right, let's go."

As you leave the room, Steiner follows you down the hall towards the transporter room. "Remember, keep your head down. Our patrols have spotted several Rebel units around the south side of the city."

"Okay, okay, you watch your ass too."

Chapter Seven

Private Janson crouched low behind the bushes. The Zollanti officer leaned over and pointed across the river to the smoldering ruins of the collapsed bridge.

"Are you sure this bridge was intact yesterday?"

"Sure was. We entered the city from this road. It'll take you straight to the starport."

The Zollanti officer looked back over his scaled shoulders at the men around him. They weren't Zollanti Shock Troopers, but they'd have to do. With a quick, silent hand motion he ordered the rebels across the water.

Before Janson could look back over his shoulder, the entire unit emerged from the undergrowth and ran past his position towards the river bank. For a brief moment, Janson recalled the fire fight at the Starport. The corporal knew that it was a suicide mission, perhaps that was why he had Janson stay back and watch from across the street. Janson already missed the Corporal, he was a good leader, a good friend. Suddenly a bright flash of light caught his eye from across the opposite bank of the river. Janson stood up and saw a brief glimpse of several shadows running to the tree line. The Zollanti officer looked up, took hold of the young foolish boy and yanked him hard to the ground.

"What are you trying to do?"

"I think I saw something over-"

     "You didn't see anything!"

"No sir, I really think I-"

"Shut your mouth or I'll shut it for you!"

"But sir I-" The Zollanti didn't have to say a word, his evil stare was enough to silence the young rebel.

Steiner immediately materialized beside a large tree. With one quick glance he saw that all his team had taken positions with in the tree line, overlooking the river. Steiner ran in a low crouch towards the river bank as the first wave of rebels were already halfway across the cold waters of the river.

"Okay people, conserve your fire power. First and second squad concentrate all firepower towards the ?pposite bank. Third squad take out those SOB's crossing the river. On my mark.... One... Two.... Three... Fire, fire, fire!"

Chapter Six

The men were assembled outside the garrison in the courtyard below. Each marine is dressed in full battle gear. As you walk outside on the front porch of the building the men quickly snap to attention. You walk down the front steps keeping your eyes fixed on the front rank. Out of the corner of your eye you can see Corporal Simms, she seems to have recovered somewhat from her injuries.

"Men I've called you together to inform you of our present situation. The Federation and Zollanti Empire are about to officially declare a state of war. Right now, an advanced Zollanti invasion fleet is orbiting the planet. The first of several landings has taken place within the last twenty four hours. We estimate the rebel strength to be around ten thousand with another twenty to thirty thousand Zollanti aiding them. We have confirmation of at least one armor division supporting the invasion as well. As some of you may already know, the rebels have totally surrounded Freeport. We can stand and fight, but in the end it will be for nothing. That's why I have decided to pull out and hope to fight our way towards the mountains. But before we pull out, we are going to demolish the city. Any questions?"

"Yes sir, why don't we use the shuttles and airlift ourselves out of the city?"

"Good question Blaine, but the terrorist raid against the starport disabled three of the four shuttles. We can't fit everyone in one, so we will have to hump our way out. Any more questions?"

"When will our guys get to Azarius?"'

"Not in time to help us. We've got to hold for sixteen more days. We can't do that here defending the city, that's why we're gonna pull out and hump our way past the rebel front lines and make our way to the mountains. Listen up people, we're gonna have to pull together on this one. Prepare to move out, we got a city to destroy."

Chapter Nine

A thick billowy column of black sooty smoke hung over Freeport like a wet blanket. Bright illuminating fires lit up half of the city as secondary explosions still ripped throughout downtown. Sergeant Steiner walked over to the window and looked out. From the garrison, he could clearly see the burning hotel he had destroyed earlier as well as the smoldering hospital. Suddenly a deep roar erupted from the center of town and made its way towards the garrison. The shock waves from the explosion shook the entire building. Steiner looked up as the lights blinked off, then on, then finally off once more. The entire city went black as the power plant's reactors exploded into the night. The garrison's generator emergency lights kicked on and blanketed the room in a reddish light. The power plant had been destroyed. All that remained now was to destroy the garrison, and pull out.

The unmistakable high pitch squeal of laser fire erupted down the street. Steiner ran down the hall grabbing two marines with him. "Follow me, the CO might be in trouble!" The three men sprint outside the building to the street corner. The distant sounds of a fire fight grows louder with each passing moment. Steiner tuned the frequency inside his helmet's comlink. "Eagle One this is Nest Egg, come over..." Steiner pointed to one of the marines and told him to go get more men. "Eagle One this is Nest Egg, come in please..."

"Come in Nest Egg this is Eagle One, over."

Steiner recognized Corporal Kim's voice. "What's the sit rep, over."

"We're cut off Sarge. I can't see the CO! I think he's down. I'm with Blaine. The others are surrounded, cut off. What'll we do?"

"Hold on, how many rebels did you see?"

"Several dozen, with tank support. Repeat with tank support."

"How in the hell did the tanks get across the river? Never mind, listen up. I want you to shadow those rebels. Try to get a fix on the CO. Blaine, you make your way back to the garrison and lead us back. I'm getting some more men. We got to get the CO out of there."
