Astonishing that a 16-year-old could create a videogame as memorable (and influential) as this. Thankfully, Robert Jaeger has finally completed his masterpiece for modern gamers. Between this "Preliminary Monty" and the 16k Parker Bros edition, I love them both, but there is a charm and style to the original that cannot be beat.

Now if only someone out there could make an Atari 8-bit version of the "complete" game! That would be fantastic.

I always enjoyed this game thoroughly. I played it mainly on the Colecovision at the time, but it was a great game on both platforms. It's an exploration game, but also plays like an arcade game with a wide variety of screens, a need to practice to get your timing right, and some whimsy to go with it (sound effects, puff of smoke when landing in lava, etc.). Worthy of classic status, and an occasional replay 40 years later.

CHEAT MODE many lives (13) for Utopia file version (34474 characters long) : change 1 byte at offset $0657 from $05 to $0D. 14 or $0E is the most lives before graphics begins to glitch on the lives screen. Glitch doesn't hurt the game so this # could go up to 250. I used a nice even number like 13 so you could earn an extra life on the first guy and not see the glitch.

CHEAT HACK survive falling, for Utopia file version (34474 characters long) : change 1 byte at offset $1E0C from $05 to $00.

Black screens far underground aren't a bug, I think we were meant to feel our way around in the dark. There seem to be some other glitches tho, this is a prototype.

Pedro sez "Don't drink the water."

This Robert Jaeger (Jäger?) version seems to be the best version of this fun, little game.

It has a nice introsequence that I can't remember seeing anywhere else, the character's name is "Pedro", and when you die, another "Pedro" is shown to walk into the previous Pedro's position.

Other than that, the playability seems to be pretty similar - I must declare this Atari 800 / XL / XE/ etc. version the best that exists.

The C64 version is good, but the Atari version(s) of this game is (are) just that much better. What a cool classic this is!

Can hardly wait to play this on a real Atari..
