Legionnaire was a brilliantly executed real-time strategy game(first of its kind?) which combined a sophisticated set of rules such as terrain, speed, endurance, flanking, and fighting spirit to very simple gameplay mechanics. I remember reading through the manual and enjoying the vivid descriptions of the various Roman units and Barbarian tribes. One tribe I do remember with dread were the Huns - I considered it a victory if I was able to take out 2 or 3 of their units before falling. I wish I were a talented enough programmer to make a flash game out of Legionnaire. I miss the fighting alongside my fellow legionnaires: Cicero, Cotta, Crassius...but not Sabinus, what a wuss!

Chris was one of the early 'greats' in programming for the Atari 8-bit. Legionnaire is a terrific strategy game with decent graphics and sound. This one, and it's brother, Eastern Front, were real competition for the SSI, and Avalon Hill, strategy games of the 80's era. Chris also wrote Caverns of Mars, another terrific game. If my memory serves me correctly, Chris was one of the early entrants into the A(tari) P(rogram) E(xchange). Atari later started First Star software, and found independent programmers bringing wonderful 'stuff', such as Boulderdash!
