There were 2 versions of Dig Dug released on Atari 8-bit computers. The first release was done by programmers from General Computer Corporation (GCC) in 1982. The dirt was solid, the enemies were 2 color, and the music stops when you stand still. Because of the 2 color enemies, there was some flicker, and the hit detections was not as good. The second release was done by Datasoft and released in 1984. This is the release that was used on the 5200. The dirt on this release was spotted, and the enemies were 1 color, and the music plays when you stand still. This version had very little flicker and better hit detection.

Other versions with the same title:
Atari, Atari France.
This seems to be a preliminary version of the 1982 release. Here are the main differences:
- the title screen and copyright message are not the same
- the intermediate PLAYER ONE READY screen is missing
- the game doesn't play well compared to the final version.
The updated 1983 release can be found here.
