There were apparently 2 versions of Dig Dug released on Atari 8-bit computers. The first release was done by programmers from General Computer Corporation (GCC) in 1982. The dirt was solid, the enemies were 2 color, and the music stops when you stand still. Because of the 2 color enemies, there was some flicker, and the hit detections was not as good. The second release was done by Datasoft and released in 1984. This is the release that was used on the 5200. The dirt on this release was spotted, and the enemies were 1 color, and the music plays when you stand still. This version had very little flicker and better hit detection.

This version of Dig Dug appeared on Datasoft/U.S. Gold's "Arcade Classics" compilation. Unfortunately, despite the improvements in this rewrite, it was still shown up by "Mr. Do"- a similar digging-type game, but with far better graphics, sound and playability. Basically, if you like Dig Dug, you'll *love* Mr. Do! |

Other versions with the same title:
Atari, US Gold.
Essentially the same as Atari's updated cartridge version (which itself is the 5200 release). The two differences in the Datasoft version are the additional DATASOFT PRESENTS intro and the missing Namco and Atari copyrights on the selection screen.
The original 1982 release can be found here. |

Many nursery rhymes are out of date. "Mary, Mary, quite contrary" for example. This one, however, is easily updated. Look, "Dig Dug, Dig Dug, quite contrary" (no razzing yet, please. Hear me out). "How does your garden grow? With Pookas and Frygars and tunnels and rocks and vegetables all in a row." The poem may not have a lot of literary merit nor will it, probably, win the Nobel... [more]
